The Challenge
Following following surges in Application to Person traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased smart phone usage, we seen some regression to the mean levels of traffic begin to occur. However, in one market in Nigeria for a particular Mobile Network, there was no such surge, traffic was stable and increasing falling as of June.
An extremely complex scenario due to the complexity of the text, and the sheer volumes of SMS which these sims were sending, it was critical that we stop the leakage of revenue. Being fully aware of the potential disruption to subscribers and the network which my decision may impact, I thoughtfully developed a particular procedure, which using regex, would allow us to capture this form of content in SMS. We would then capture the sim cards using these types of content and block the sim-cards from sending traffic.
Normal procedure would take a number of weeks to tackle this activity, however, from our analysis the revenue leakage was far too high to wait.
The Solution
Following a deep dive into the numbers, it was seen that on a network entry point, sim-boxing had occurred (this is where multiple sim-cards are used to terminate A2P SMS at a cheaper rate that wholesale), where highly obfuscated text was being used, which bypassed the textual based rules in the SMS FW.
Our team developed a detailed report, highlighting the number of SMS and various content, which were bypassing their SMSFW (SMS Firewall) and the impacted revenue, a similar report was presented to internal stakeholders for review, highlighting the number of potential to block SMS & SIM cards .
Once brought forward to the customer, there was opposition in regard to why we have suggested blocking the sim-card and not just the SMS, from the standpoint of a data analyst, our team highlighted that it was more efficient to block the SMS from the source, rather than the SMS themselves, as it was much easier for the bypass entity to change the content of the SMS to bypass the Firewall again, than if the MSISSDN / sim-card was blocked – which made it much more difficult and less feasible for the bypass entity to operate.
The Result
Following on and taking action on the insights provided, the customer receuved incumbent increase in revenue which had been seen over the rest of the month on 18%.
